DCnU New 52 :: Justice League #1
Posted by Sy Calaelen
Thank goodness for almost good timing! I managed to get my hands on the issue #1 of the DCnU re-launch of the Justice League and I am super thrilled. I went to my friends comic book and merchandise store where he stocks practically everything you want, from Marvel and DC comics, to manga, anime, collectable character statues and film stills. I knew about the re-launch from a while back, when I went to catch up on the Hellblazer series. Knowing how much I love DC and all things Vertigo (a sub-division of DC and Time Warner), my friend let me in on an industry secret, which later proved to be true, and just for good measure he told me about Marvel’s re-launch a few weeks later.
I didn’t check DC for any info on the release dates which I should have, but good old Constantine took me away from that. A few weeks back I got an email from a friend, also a blogger and avid comic book reader, telling me the first issue of Justice League was finally up on the website to download. I must admit, having artist Jim Lee and inker Scott Williams do the amazing work it took me a few attempts to read the download. I’m always thrown into a world of total awe when brilliant artists just tug at my imagination with perfect lines and colour. For me, the artwork is one of the greatest privileges to a good story, and I’m very judgemental. If the work looks shit, I’m not interested, hands down. I’m a very tough customer – thank goodness for 75% of artists doing brilliant work huh?
Geoff Johns did a fantastic job, considering it’s the first in line for the New 52, you have to look at it from the standing point that you’ve never known or been introduced to the crime busting superheroes that is Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Cyborg, Green Arrow, Flash (Barry Allen) and The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). If you have kids who want to sit and collect comics properly then introduce them to the re-launch and get their taste buds going for a real adventure; go now! Time is running out! The re-launch started selling from the 31st August 2011, and I’ve only just got my hands on issue #1. My friend referred to it as ‘the crazy selling crazy comic book re-launch craziness issue #1?’ after I asked if he had any left in stock. According to him, some of his comic book pals who own their own comic books stores and/or online they have been selling some of the comics for an average of £30 a copy! Craziness for sure! But I love it! I got mine for £5 instead of £10, and he his it behind the counter and advised me to keep it sealed and never open it unless writers and/or artists came by the shop for a signing event. Sure will, Bub (his nickname… long story).

I’m super excited about the Batman re-launch too! So excited I’m quaking in my boots. I have been a Batman fan since I was a little bubba. I had slippers, all-in-ones, toys, comics (which I ripped or coloured in so they are ruined =[ and the kids cutlery set). I wanted to grow up and marry Adam West or Batman, but the closest I came to that was watching the classic shows on TV, reading the comics and watching and fully understanding the films. Most fashion savvy girls like me at the time were in love with Barbie and her weird clone Cindy, but my world consisted of marriage and divorces between Batman and Barbie. Let’s see what the new Batman has in store for me =P
Fashion Crisis :: Dr Martens Dilemma
Posted by Sy Calaelen
Okay, so I’m having a bit of an emergancy… I need inspiration and ideas to wear with my Cherry Red 1460 Dr Martens boots… They are new, as I’ve never worn them (too busy to at the moment with work etc), and I have no idea what to wear them with. I’ve seen a few ladies around the city and town wearing floral dresses, red scarves, red hair and the cherry boots. I’m also tempted to get some lovely ribbons to lace my boots with, rather than using the original lace.
Skirts and dresses are worn with Dr Martens these days, to give them a feminine look and a cute vintage style. They are more than just ‘shoes’ as they are stacked up (in their boxes) with my clothes; my shoes live elsewhere.
I have fairly large legs too. They look good in a lovely short skirt etc, but in jeans or trousers, they look like tree trunks, and if I wear trousers/skinny jeans, I know I’ll look very odd indeed. What do you folks wear with your Dr Martens?
If I can’t figure something out but January, I’ll have to hit my Youtube page at TheHarlequinDays. Ah… what to do?

Red is my all time favourite colour, and has been since I was 4 or 5. Don’t forget I have an afro… so wearing red boots in the UK can be seen as kinda ‘whoa shock 80s riots’…
What do you think of these pictures? I’m making a new dream/mood board for my wardrobe and I’m almost complete.
What could go with my other boots too? Help!!!
Help!!!

ASOS - Ash
I am not sure, but I love these shoes. They are by Ash. Cute.

ASOS - Arizona
These are shoes that would be good with a nice pair of blue or black skinny jeans, or a nice plain and neutral toned dress.

Dr. Martens & ASOS
I still need to buy these boots. As you know, I’m a huge DR. Martens lover! These boots are the 1460 8-Eyelet, and available at ASOS and DR. Martens.

Carvella shoes and boots can be found in most high street stores, but I buy mine directly from the Kurt Geiger website. I love Carvella and Kurt Geiger designs!

ASOS - ABLAZE
Ooh god these are mouth watering. I’d wear these with a plain dress, or a plain outfit, just to have people look at my feet! Haha, no I do’t have a foot fetish… I just want my feet to look lush.
Mwah x

I this magazine. Papa J had found and sent the link to me and I’ve been hooked all afternoon. It’s like a fusion of VICE and POP, oh Gosh!
It’s a base for artists, photographers, models, fashion victims like myself and creative people with pop and a certain level of zazz.

Glued: How to be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
Posted by Sy Calaelen
Oh
My
Goddess!
It’s about flipping time!

Caitlin Moran
This book is AMAZING! I would order that any woman on the planet should get this book and read it. I guarantee, you’ll not only look back on your lives and reminisce how hard and awkward it was to be a frilly pink princess and wake up with boobs and missing the vote because of blood stained sheets. This book is fantastic on so many levels. I’ve only just bought it, and I’ve been glued to it so much I’m already half way through! How many days is that now…? 2 days… gosh. I’m a slow reader, so that’s pretty impressive.
This book tackles the ‘touchy’ subject of pornography as a tool for teaching young kids about appearance, sex, attitudes toward words concerning the ‘lady flower’, Jilly Cooper and life as a blooming young lady from the 80s until now. It’s THE summer anicdote to female understanding on a light political manner, with feminist fists and life in one go. It’s perfect!
I must say, only having read part of it, I’ve found it incrediably difficult to look like I’m not having a fit of laughter or a satirical meltdown in the back of a bus. That last time I read a book as funny, neat and true as this was Stephen Fry‘s Moab is my Washpot. AMAZING! I’ve only recently started looking into feminism and what it would mean to me, especially since I feel the ‘little-activist’ in me is finally learning how to walk, alongside PETA, The Red Cross, Pagan pride and modern women with tattoo ART.
Part memior and part feminist, and teenage (what to expect now that you are growing up, since your parents won’t tell you) manual, this book is a must have. I would have kept it in time for the next Paris excursion, but my little fingers have a mind of their own and I couldn’t wait! I would give you a better review, but I’m on chapter 9 – I Go Lap-dancing! For now, read the reviews and watch the video. Once I’ve read it, I’ll make a review video for TheHarlequinDays – make sure to comment =]

My Newish Dr Martens So Far…
Posted by Sy Calaelen
More galore… I think Iim officially a collector now! I have about 3 more pairs in my Amazon basket and 2 pairs in my Dr Martens basket! Anyhoo, thought I’d share my crappy photos of the ones I have now, an their boxes. The old ones I have will be given to my little sister or brother if they want them, otherwise they’ll be collectors items.
Dr Marten Galore…. Once Again….
Posted by Sy Calaelen
Firstly, I’m a mini activist. I won’t eat meat, I donate to PETA and I’m slowly turning vegan, but… and it’s a BIG but… I can’t live without my Dr Marten boots… It’s the only leather items I’ll ever own! Besides that ghastly fur coat my aunt is saving for a proper burial (the coat, not herself). I’ll be doing a few more photos by the middle of next week or so, of new OOTD’s I’ve compiled. They’ll appear here at some point, but they’ll be on Lookbook and Chictopia first =]
I am channelling a new sense of freedom with my newest style crush, which actually formed from the mind spring of vintage meets 80s retro glam with a Victorian Mod sex appeal. Basically vintage styled dresses, faux leather jackets, fairy white waistcoats etc teamed up with bad-ass DMs. If anyone is interested in buying a few non worn DMs let me know! There are only three that a friend of mine is selling, and I’ll do a post by tomorrow =]
For now, check this picture, it’s so me! (well it’s not me but you get my drift)

Dresses and DMs Oh My! Tres Chic!
My Latest babies:

Dr Martens 1460 - Smooth Cherry Red

Dr Martens 1460 - Smooth Black

Dr Martens 1460 - Smooth Navy
-Forgive me Gods, fore I know what I do is wrong… x
